Burak Gokturk, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer & Co-Founder at Riya
Burak GokturkDr. Gokturk is a co-founder and CTO of Riya Inc. He currently leads the research team in Riya Inc. Dr. Gokturk spent over a decade in the image recognition field developing algorithms in medical imaging to provide the best recognition rates in early diagnosis of colon cancer. During this time he also developed algorithms in human tracking, facial expression tracking and recognition, object based compression systems, design of 3D cameras, and virtual keyboard systems. This work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, U.S. patents and used in a variety of products. After devoting many years to the image recognition field, Dr. Gokturk and his team have focused the past two years on building technology for vast consumer use. In particular, he developed two major internet-based products: Riya.com and Like.com. Dr. Gokturk and his team have created model based face recognition algorithms with application to consumer photographs. This was the first attempt for a face recognition application in the consumer space and under completely uncontrolled environments. This one-of-a-kind product, which demonstrates facial recognition as well as text recognition technology, can be visited at Riya.com. Most recently, Dr. Gokturk developed algorithms for product recognition including segmentation and image representation as well as automatic algorithms to learn the importance of color, pattern and shape for soft consumer goods. This innovative product serves as similarity shopping guide for consumers and can be accessed at Like.com. Through the invention and deployment of these technologies, Dr. Gokturk and his team’s image recognition algorithms are used by millions of people for the first time since the inception of the field.

Bryan Zmijewski, Chief Instigator at LuckyOliver & Design Lecturer at Stanford University
Bryan ZmijewskiEntrepreneur Bryan Zmijewski is a Campbell, California based brand engineer, writer and consultant. While completing his Bachelor's degree in Product Design from Stanford University, Bryan began working with Skyline, a manufacturer of children's toys.

As Skyline's first employee, Bryan gained experience in many areas. Impressed by his design sense and his self-starter nature, Skyline founders made Bryan responsible not only for creating ideas for new toys, but also for deciding how best to market those toys. Bryan's hard work helped move Skyline from a startup company to an industry leader; the company was purchased by product design giant IDEO.

After acquisition by IDEO, Bryan helped integrate Skyline into IDEO, ensuring a smooth transition and establishing strategic energy. In his continued work with IDEO, he facilitated communication and working relationships with more than 100 toy companies, as well as helping create and license more than 40 toy concepts to companies like Mattel (Barbie, Fisher Price, and Tyco), Hasbro and Playmates.

Bryan became more interested in running his own business. This interest led him to co-found eXPLICO, Inc. His experience at eXPLICO gave him a crash course in the intricacies and many tasks that must be handled in order to successfully start a business. Bryan was responsible for everything from the company's website development, recruiting and managing 9 consultants, pitching the company to potential angel investors and recruiting board members.

At the same time of his work at eXPLICO, Bryan also served as a lecturer at Stanford University, an assignment he still holds today. Within the University's design division, Bryan teaches both basic and advanced design conceptualization classes. During his tenure, he introduced a curriculum focusing on utilizing new technologies to improve ideation, and integrating business concepts and trends from the new economy.

While continuing his teaching duties at Stanford, Bryan formed ZURB in February of 1998. At ZURB, Bryan serves as a brand engineer providing strategic design, marketing and branding assistance. His work for clients including Sun Microsystems, Versitas, Finisar and ClickTracks has included identity development, illustration, information design, web design, software design, icon design and multimedia work.

Bryan's future plans include co-authoring a book on the intangibles inherent in business relationships, lecturing to both students and business groups on design issues and continuing to grow his art and photography interests.
