I don't have any experience programming in javascript or a server-side language, my background is mostly in c++ and flash actionscript 2.0 and very little Java. Would it still be possible to be efficient at the hackathon with my background?

OpenSocial Javascript APIs are in javascript. However it is not too difficult to learn javascript if you are familiar with Actionscript 2.0. After our 1st hackathon, we may have additional information. Please review the sample application on OpenSocial site.
